A wide variety of activities will happen outdoors and indoors for participants at the IN Dunes State Park beginning at 10:00 am on Thursday, Aug. 15 and concluding at 3:00 pm on Aug. 18. Activities include drum making, poetry readings, campfire stories, dramatizations, and a panel discussion about art of the IN Dunes. Mary Ann Pals will be one of three art panelists giving a presentation on Friday, Aug. 16 from 2:00-3:30 pm (CT) at the nature center. Participants may purchase tickets to attend all or part of the hands-on activities (Eventbrite link provided on this page), or they can attend just the artist panel discussion for free (fee to enter park).
Chautauqua in the Dunes brings together individuals, families, and groups to learn from each other and expand their worldview. Chautauquas were a popular educational model in the 1880s-1920s prior to the advent of mass media. Chautauquas were held around the country exposing local residents to world class cultural and artistic performances, lectures, debates, and round table discussions on economics, history, politics, environment, religion, medicine, and science, and community service opportunities.
We will create a contemporary Chautauqua experience in the Indiana Dunes State Park, August 15-18, 2019 thanks in part to the Arts in the Parks and Historic Sites Grant program managed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Indiana Arts Commission. Tickets are available for the entire Chautauqua experience including camping at Indiana Dunes State Park or single day passes.
